As I write this, I’m sitting in my friends’ farmhouse in Lincoln, Massachusetts, which borders upon Walden Pond, where the American Transcendentalist movement began in the 1830s. In this very location sprang a philosophy, some might even say a religion, that stressed self reliance and a profound connection to nature, among other things. Many of you may not have heard of this movement but most will recognize the name Henry David Thoreau, best known for his book Walden.
So why am I starting this blog about an ocean journey in a farmhouse a few dozen miles from the sea? Simply because I’m attempting to make this journey with the same spirit of self reliance and connection to nature. In fact, I can’t think of another enterprise that would better accomplish these goals.
